Separate identified quantity allowances from a risk reserve.

A plumbing contingency is a visible allowance for defined uncertainty. Its amount should follow the estimate’s risks and design stage rather than a standard percentage copied into every bid.

Confirm scope and assumptions against your project documents.

Scope and inputs to reconcile

Distinguish measurable missing scope, uncertain installation conditions and pricing uncertainty. A stated quantity allowance is different from a general contingency reserve.

Workflow and checks

List each risk, the affected cost category, the information needed to resolve it and the person responsible for review. Revise or retire the allowance when that information arrives.

What the output should show

Keep a risk/allowance register linked to the cost summary, with the basis and included scope stated beside each allowance.

Exclusions and unresolved decisions

A contingency does not cover every future change or establish who bears a contractual risk. Avoid adding escalation both here and in supplier pricing.

Documents to share for a quote

Provide design stage, unresolved RFIs, site information and the budget rules required by the project team.
