Plumbing Markup & Profit Margin Calculator for Bids

Calculate a bid price from your entered costs using either markup on cost or a target margin on selling price. Compare the resulting markup, margin, and amount above cost without assuming a recommended profit target.

All amounts start at zero. Use your own rates and cost records; these calculations do not provide market prices or a service quote.

Calculated bid price: $0.00

Amount above entered cost: $0.00

Margin on price: 0.00%

Markup on cost: 0.00%

Markup and margin use different denominators

Markup price = cost × (1 + markup percentage ÷ 100). Target margin price = cost ÷ (1 − margin percentage ÷ 100). Margin is the amount above cost divided by price; markup divides that amount by cost.

For example, $1,000 cost with 20% markup produces $1,200 price and 16.67% margin. A 20% target margin on the same cost produces $1,250 price and 25% markup. These examples do not recommend a target percentage.

Enter all costs you intend to recover, including overhead allocations where appropriate. The amount above your entered cost is not net profit unless all applicable expenses have been included. A target margin of 100% cannot be calculated from positive costs.

Apply the calculation to a drawing-based estimate
