Plumbing Blueprint Symbols & Legend Guide
The definitive contractor's visual guide to interpreting plumbing blueprint symbols: line styles, valve icons, drain markers, and understanding how project legends govern drawing sets.
How Do You Read Plumbing Blueprint Symbols?
To read plumbing blueprint symbols: 1) First inspect the project-specific symbol legend on drawing sheet P-001, 2) Identify system piping by its line style (e.g. solid line with single dot for cold water; dashed line for vent), 3) Recognize standard valve glyphs (two touching triangles for gate/ball valves), and 4) Match fixture tags (WC-1, LAV-1) to the mechanical fixture schedule.
Project-Specific Legends Always Govern
While national engineering standards (such as ASME Y14.38 and ASPE design guidelines) establish baseline symbols, individual engineering firms routinely customize their symbols and abbreviations. An abbreviation or line style used for Domestic Cold Water on one set may indicate Chilled Water on another. An estimator must always inspect sheet P-001 or M-001 before starting quantity takeoff.
Standard Plumbing Piping Line Styles
Piping networks are distinguished on 2D floor plans using distinct CAD linestyles:
| Abbrev | CAD Line Style Pattern | Piping System Name | Engineering Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| DCW | —— · —— · —— | Domestic Cold Water | Solid line with single repeating dot. Pressurized potable cold water supply. |
| DHW | —— ·· —— ·· —— | Domestic Hot Water | Solid line with double repeating dots. Pressurized potable hot water distribution. |
| HWR | —— ··· —— ··· —— | Hot Water Recirculation | Solid line with triple repeating dots. Continuous return loop to water heater. |
| SAN | ———————————— | Sanitary Sewer / Soil Pipe | Heavy continuous solid line. Gravity-flow wastewater to building drain. |
| VENT | - - - - - - - - - | Atmospheric Vent Stack | Dashed line pattern. Air circulation network equalizing stack pressure. |
| STORM | —— ─ —— ─ —— | Storm / Rainwater Leader | Heavy centerline dash pattern. Gravity drainage from roof drains. |
| GAS | —— G —— G —— | Natural Gas / Fuel Piping | Solid line with intermittent letter 'G'. Fuel gas supply to equipment. |
Standard Plumbing Valve & Specialty Symbols
Inline mechanical valves are represented by geometric glyphs positioned on the pipe centerline:
| Symbol Glyph | Component Name | Commercial Application & Sizing Note |
|---|---|---|
| ▷◁ | Gate Valve | Full-way isolation valve; rarely used for throttling; bronze or cast iron body. |
| ▷●◁ | Ball Valve (Quarter-Turn) | Standard commercial branch isolation; full-port brass/bronze with blowout-proof stem. |
| ▷|◁ | Butterfly Valve | Flanged or lug-type valve used on large-diameter headers (4" and above) for tight shutoff. |
| ▷| | Check Valve (Swing / Spring) | Permits fluid flow in one direction only; prevents backflow contamination or pump reversal. |
| ▷PRV◁ | Pressure Reducing Valve | Diaphragm valve that steps down high municipal street pressure to safe interior PSI. |
| RPZ | Reduced Pressure Zone Backflow | ASSE 1013 certified dual check and relief valve assembly for high-hazard containment. |
